Obituary for James G. Smith

James G. Smith
James G. Smith, 82, received his wings on Monday, November 28, 2016. His final days were spent surrounded by family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

James began his life in Lexington, Mississippi. He migrated to Toledo Ohio when he was 21 years of age. He was active and faithful member at Greater St. Mary’s Baptist Church, serving first as an usher, singing in the Male Chorus, and serving as a trustee. Additionally, he was responsible for the maintenance of the church for several years. Throughout his years of employment he was a salesman, became a skilled trade millwright at U.S. Reduction for nearly two decades and never missed a day of work. Before retiring, he worked for over ten years with Doehler-Jarvis. He was a member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist and he served as a union steward with the Teamsters Union. Additionally, he was an enthusiastic political campaign volunteer and poll worker for the Democratic Party for several years.

He enjoyed volunteering his time and leisure at the Troy Center, providing retail security and a Thirty-Second Degree Mason. He championed the Card Game of Spades. But his most precious time was to spend it with his family and grandchildren.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Virgie; daughters: Anya (Leroy) Seymour, Avon, IN; Shirley (Chris) Smith, Trivia (Montriese) King, and Vonda (Eric) Williams. Brothers: McBee Smith, John Smith, Madison, WI, Hertis (Mildred) Smith, Madison, WI, Earl Smith, Dale (Glenda) Smith, Lexington, MS. Sisters: Laverne Estes, Richmond, CA; Celestina, Jordan, CA. Grandchildren: Lee, Champaign, IL, Teddy, Sherman Oaks, CA and Paul Seymour Avon, IN; Sean (Monica) Easterly, Columbus, OH; James and Jonathan King; Erin and Elana Williams. Step-Grandchildren: Erica Williams, Christopher Jr. (Melissa) and Tahyah Smith. Step-Great grandchildren: Josiah Williams, Dylan Smith, Charli, Bailey, Charles and Logan Waldon. He was preceded in death by his parents McBee and Eula C. Smith, brother Paul Smith and sister Annie B. Baker.

James’ life was full of blessings. He loved his family and they loved him back; but God loved him more. The family wishes to thank the many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. We also extend a special appreciation to Pastor Robert and Sister Shirley Lyons and ProMedica Hospice.
