Obituary for Alvin Carter Ford

Alvin Carter Ford
ALVIN CARTER FORD made his transition February 16, 2018 at his home in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Alvin was born at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, Michigan July 29, 1958, to Rose Harriet (Carter) Ford and Alvin Ford of Detroit.

Alvin grew up in Windsor, Ontario, graduated from J.L. Forster Secondary School, and shortly thereafter joined the United States Navy in 1979. “Little Alvin” as he was fondly called in his youth soon became “Big Al” after life in the Navy.
Alvin became an Aviation Electrician, First Class Petty Officer. In his own way, he was following in his father’s footsteps by becoming an Electrician. During the Gulf Era, he was assigned to locations such as The Philippines, Guam, Southern California and Hawaii. Alvin traveled the world in a special classified unit of the Navy. There were times when Al could not call home when on Top Secret missions. The running joke was when he eventually called and was asked by his family members “where were you?” he would say “if I told you, I would have to kill you”.

When Al retired from the Navy in 1994, he returned home and eventually joined the ranks of U.S. Customs and Border Protection Services (CBP). He worked land ports at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Soon after, he transferred to Detroit Metro Airport International CBP.

Alvin never met a stranger and most who met him, even briefly, said he was the consummate “nice guy”. Always a gentleman and a “gentle” man. Alvin loved to tell stories of his adventures or who he met coming through his line at Customs and hang out with friends. Once he became your friend, that was a lock for a lifetime. He rarely got riled and would basically go with the flow. He was generous with his time, attention and laughter. Al had big dreams and a positive vision for his future. We were blessed by his life with us.

Alvin is survived by his brother Kevin (Cassandra), sister Maria (Darryl), brothers Stephen and Mark. Loved and respected by so many, Al will be remembered as a big brother, cool uncle, fun-loving cousin and dear friend. He was an honorable man and proud Navy veteran.

Memories of Alvin will be cherished by his siblings, niece and nephews, great nieces and nephews, countless cousins, many friends, neighbors and co-workers

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 12:00 noon, preceded by an 11:00 am Wake at Trinity Episcopal Church, 11575 Belleville Rd., Belleville, Michigan 48111
