Obituary for Myrtle Lee Rawls

Myrtle Lee Rawls, age 100 years old, passed away at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Thursday, August 2, 2018. She was born June 6, 1918 in Lakeland, Florida, the seventh child, to Gordon and Viola (Jackson) Jones. Myrtle at an early age started singing in the church choir and became very popular as a young soloist for her entire community. She worked for many years as a life insurance agent and was a familiar face and friend to many people in Lakeland.

Before retiring, she became a licensed Nurse Aide for the elderly. She loved to read, travel, watch classic movies and Family Feud. She was given recognition for being the oldest living high school graduate in her hometown. She was a person of great faith, humility, and strength. She loved having her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren together. She has modeled for her family a life of obedience and faithfulness to Christ. She lived a long and purpose-filled life. Even in her nineties she would say, “If I could walk, I would get a job.” She will be greatly missed.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Gerald (Joyce) Rawls, Gus Rawls, Phillip Rawls; daughter Judith (Charles) Waldon, Sr.; grandchildren Michael (Grace) Waldon, Anthony (Zeinab) Waldon, Charles Waldon, Jr., Natalie Waldon, Rhonda (Kevin) Camp, Andre Galloway, Curtis (Joanna) Galloway, and Israel (Kristen) Galloway; 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy Rawls, parents, siblings, a grandson and two nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 14 from 7-9pm at House of Day Funeral Home, 2550 Nebraska Avenue. The wake will be Wednesday, August 15 at 11am at First Church of God; 3016 Collingwood Boulevard and funeral services will follow at 12pm with Bishop Robert Culp officiating. Interment will be at Oakhill Cemetery in Lakeland, Florida.
