Obituary for Leon Carlton Barnett Sr.
How do you put into words a LIFETIME OF LOVE - it is so very hard to express, but express I must. The life of my HUSBAND, CONFIDANT AND CLOSEST FRIEND - I choke up with the thought that I can no longer see his visible presence on a daily basis, or hear his voice calling to me, but, he has left me with a lifetime of PRECIOUS MEMORIES:
LEON CARLTON BARNETT, SR.
Let me call out your name with Reverence, with Humility and with the Boldness it deserves, because you have been my strength for more than 50 years. Just like any other marriage, we have had our own storms, but those storms turned out to be simply waves in the night - because we overcame each and every obstacle placed in our way - and we stood steadfast and loved each other with a LOVE THAT WILL WITHSTAND ALL TIME!!
Leon Carlton Barnett was received into the world on, December 11, 1942, and departed his earthly home on June 1, 2017. He was a beautiful baby and loved immensely by his mother, Edna Louise Barnett Snodgrass.
Leon was raised by a village, his grandparents, Agnes and Allen Barnett, Sr., (until his death), acted as parents to him along with his mother, Louise and her husband, Marshall Snodgrass, who loved and accepted him as his own. His village was completed by being raised with his aunts and uncles on his mother's side, who treated him as their little brother, and then upon their arrival, he was raised with his siblings.
Leon attended Riverside Elementary School and then attended Woodward High School, where he played on the Junior Varsity Basketball team on which they won the Junior Varsity City Champioship. Upon meeting Ida Sanders, the true Love of his life, he transferred to Scott High School, so he could be close to her. Leon and Ida married on April 5, 1963.
Ida Mae Sanders Barnett remained the wife of Leon Carlton Barnett, Sr., for 54 years until his passing. To this union was born three children, twin son, Leon Carlton, Jr. and Deion, daughter, Sabrina; his daughter, Lynette; son, Shawn; all of his children held a very special place in his heart along with his wife, Ida.
Ida B., as she is affectionately called by his siblings, is considered a sister to his siblings, because of the love she has continuously shown towards the entire Barnett/Snodgrass family.
Leon and Ida started their marriage together with him finding employment at at Unicast, after years of employment at Unicast, he found employment at Doehler Jarvis for several years until his employment at Jeep, aka, Chrysler, from which he retired with over 30 years of service.
Leon enjoyed spending time with his family and his in-laws. He loved the Casinos, and Casino traveling trips he took with his wife and sister-in-laws and sometimes his children and he loved playing cards.
Leon had a passion for basketball and used to pick up backyard basketball games with Mr. Jack Baker (RIP), along with the neighborhoods kids. Leon loved playing alongside or against his brother Jimmy and their friend Oscar Hill, this continued for years until they all got along in years. Everyone who knew Leon, knew that he loved his Music, Western, War Movies and most definitely, he loved his clothes. He was always known to be DAPPER, and never liked to have any article of clothing on that was wrinkled! He was a master at ironing his clothing (smile), and was known to wear crocodile shoes and dress clothing to work.
Leon loved to spend time with his uncle, Allen Barnett, Jr., aka, "Junie", and his best friend, Earl Landry, Sr., and lifelong friends, Murray Duerson, Earl Gregory, Tommy Russell, and Steve Sims.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna, father, Marshall, grandparents, Allen and Agnes, granddaughter, Latoya Okey, sister, Cynthia Harper, mother and father-in-law, Nazareth and Rosie Sanders, Sr., brothers-in-law, Adolph Sanders, Moses Sanders, Willie Sanders and Richard Carter.
Leaving to cherish his precious memories is his wife, Ida Mae Barnett; children, Leon, Jr. (Crystal), Deion (Nina), Sabrina (Nornan, Jr.) Jamison, Lynette (Greg) Garrett, and Shawn Thompson, Sr.; siblings, James Snodgrass, Sr., Ann Marie Hall, Marlena Hinton-Carter, and Eva (Pete) Lyle, Jr.; 23 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; in-laws, Nazareth Sanders, Jr., Gladys Armstrong, Delores Law, Betty Landry, Josie Patterson, Anita Sanders, Debran (Earl) Brown, Amos (Bonita) Sanders, and Lavern (Judge) Rhodes; aunts' uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 11:00 am, preceded by a 10:00 am Wake, at the House of Day Funeral Service.
