Obituary for Vincent Vase Woodhouse
Vincent Vase Woodhouse passed this life on July 30, 2017 at Jacksonville Memorial
Hospital in Florida. He was born to Elijah and Caroline (Mammy) Woodhouse on April
16, 1929 in Old Works, Saint Catherine, Jamaica. A devoted husband, he was married
to the late Jess Ann Woodhouse in 1975.
He graduated from Old Works Basic and Watermount All Age schools and later worked
as a Prison Warder for several years at the Spanish Town prison facility. In 1978, he
migrated to Toledo, Ohio where he worked as a Die Caster in the manufacturing
industry. He was later self-employed as Home Improvement Specialist before retiring in
1995. He then opened up his home to displaced children where his home ultimately
was awarded the State’s top foster home that year.
Vincent Woodhouse was a devoted Christian, an usher, and a member of the church
choir for several years. He was a self-taught man who had an insatiable desire to learn.
Vince was a complex philosophical thinker who enjoyed a good argument and debate.
Amongst his many talents, Vincent was also an excellent cook and loved to entertain.
One of Vincent’s most significant achievements was his selection in 1995 as the “Foster
Parent of the Year” for the State of Ohio. For his efforts, he received a “Certificate of
Recognition” from the Ohio House of Representatives; “Certificate of Recognition” from
the Ohio Senate; a “Certificate of Recognition” from the Mayor of Toledo; also, a
“Certificate of Recognition” from the City Commissioner of Toledo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jess Ann Woodhouse; sisters, Beatrice
Mary and Petrona; brothers, Edward and Alphonso and his adopted daughter Lorraine.
Mr. Vincent Vase Woodhouse leaves to cherish his memories; two daughters, Victoria
Barnes and Jennifer Bamba; son, O’Neil (wife, Sharon) Woodhouse; nephews, Sun,
Bonnie, Elijah and George; nieces, Prescilla, Lucilda and Michelle; seven
grandchildren, Bovell, ShaNeil, Natasha, Janai, Hakim, Cory and Billon; two great
grandchildren; Goddaughters, Ruthie Lewis, Lisa Green and a host of other nieces,
nephews, relatives, and friends.
