Obituary for Crystal Barnett

Crystal  Barnett
Crystal Lynn Barnett, born December 20, 1962, in Toledo, OH, to the union of Leroy, II and Jamey L. Barnett. She departed this life on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Crystal was preceded in death by her mother and her eldest sister, Camille Barnett.

Crystal attended Toledo Public Schools, graduating in 1981, from Jesup W. Scott High School. She was the class’ Salutatorian. She continued her education at Miami University, in Oxford, OH, earning a Bachelor’s Degree, in Philosophy. Later, she attended the University of Toledo, receiving her Master’s Degree, in Education, specializing in Music. She taught music in the TPS system for many years.

Crystal was exposed to music early in her childhood, beginning with her maternal grandmother. There was always singing at every family function, from these occasions, the gospel group, “The Prodigals” was formed. Crystal was one of the founding members, along with two of her sisters, three aunts, and two cousins. She also sang with “The Clarence Smith Community Chorus,” from 2002 until her passing. In 1995, she performed in The Toledo Repertoire Theatre’s Broadway Production of, “Ain’t Misbehavin,” and recorded with The University of Toledo’s Jazz Band.

Crystal discovered her love for poetry over thirty years ago when she was asked to compose a Memorial Poem for her great-great aunt, Blanche Hubble. Since that time, she has been writing poems for various functions and honoring many individuals.

She authored the following books: “Single Motherhood, A Blessing In Disguise,” “Faith, A Collection Of Original Plays,” “Jewels From The Heart, A Collection Of Original Poetry.”

She accepted Christ at an early age, and learned to Love the word of God! She was a long time member of Bethel Apostolic Temple, which was founded by, District Elder Emeritus, Ernest Cross. She later transitioned to Peace Tabernacle Family Worship Center, under the leadership of Pastor Francine Brown. While there, Crystal became an ordained minister.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her Father, Leroy Barnett II of Gahanna, OH, Step-Father, Ellsworth Neal; Sons, Rodney, Justin and Jamey Barnett, all of Toledo, OH. Brothers, Leroy Barnett III (Jacqueline) Columbia, SC and Clay Neal, Toledo; Sisters, Carla Johnson of Toledo, Caren Hinton (Norman) of Toledo. God-daughters, Whitney Jones, and Tiffany Woodson. Special Friends, Angel Street-Underwood, Sheila Sistrunk, and Kimberly Dada; Surrogate Mom/Caregiver, Harriet Grier, and a host of Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nephews, Nieces, and Friends.
