Obituary for Ida B. Chestnut

Print
Ida Bell Chestnut of Toledo, passed away Friday, November 2, 2018 at Ridgewood Manor in Maumee, OH.. She was 89 years young. Ida was born in Cleveland, Arkansas, May 12, 1929, to the union of Henry Smith and Ethel (Ross) Smith.

During a visit to Toledo to visit her family, Ida met Otis Chestnut, and the two were later married. To this union two children, Goletha and Michael, were born. Their family also included Ida's daughter, Idetta "Det", Loren and Leonard, Otis' two sons from his first marriage. Ida had fond memories of her two stepsons, the most memorable and cherished being when they started calling her mom. Ida loved taking care of her family and helping wherever she could. If you needed something you knew you could count on her.

Ida was very proud of their home she and Otis purchased in the Old West End. She remained there after his passing with the help of her son, Michael, until moving into Ridgewood Manor. After his passing, their grandchildren brought light back into her life.

At Ridgewood Manor Ida was "adopted" into a community of friends that made sure she was loved and cared for. She enjoyed the fellowship of residents and caring staff members. She especially liked the exercise classes, and she became the acclaimed "Corn-Hole Champion". Her son Michael continued to care for her as well and faithfully visited her daily, sometimes twice a day. When his own health began to fail, his children, Dalonna and Michael Jr., stepped up and stepped in to care for Granny. They kept the promise their father made to their grandfather, to take care of their grandmother.

Ida Bell (Smith) Chestnut leaves a rich legacy. A legacy of: family first, love, sacrifice, hard work, the spirit of helping and caring, being a good cook, being on time, practical minded (knowing how to make do), being a "Green Thumb", She was a woman of virtue and integrity and was loved by everyone.

She was preceded in death by her husband Otis Chestnut, daughter Idetta Hudson, stepson Leonard Chestnutt, son Michael Chestnut, Sr., brother Freddie Ross, nieces Parthina Ross and Diane Ross and nephew Fredrick "Butch" Ross.

Ida Bell (Smith) Chestnut is survived by daughter, Goletha (Marlen) Smith of Camby, IN; stepson, Loren Chestnut of Columbus, OH; granddaughter, Dalonna McDaniel and grandson, Michael A.Chestnut, Jr. both of Toledo, OH; granddaughter, Noni Smith of Camby, IN; great-grandson, Jayden Carswell of Toledo,OH; Niece, Vanessa (Adrian) Lacy, of Vallejo, CA; Nieces, Deborah Galloway and Lorinda McCalebb both of Toledo, OH; Nephew, Layon McCalebb of Toledo,OH; Nieces, Freddie Bell Chambers, Myree Johnson, Linda Ross all of Cleveland, AK; Niece, Gwen McDaniel of Kansas City, MO; Niece, Ida Jewel Ross of Los Angeles, CA; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
