Obituary

Cora Lee (Coleman) Hammond traded in her earthly wings for her heavenly crown on December 5, 2018. Born September 17, 1941 in Marion, Indiana to Alfred & Hattie Mae (Murphy) Coleman, Cora was the sixth of seven children and has resided in Toledo, Ohio since she was 3 years old.

She was a graduate of Whitney Vocational School where she focused on food service and becoming an exceptional seamstress. She also attended Robinson Jr. High and Gunkel Elementary.

Cora was employed by the Toledo Board of Education as a Food Service Supervisor for 30 years until retiring in 2000 to enjoy life. It would be through this job that She would touch many lives at both Fulton Elementary and Waite High School. She was known for giving extra donuts to students, packing backpacks with food so that kids didn’t go hungry over the weekend, drying socks for kids whose feet got wet from the snow because they didn't have boots and sharing wisdom, guidance and love with the students she came in contact with. In addition, Cora also worked at Parkview Hospital and catered and sewed for many throughout the city of Toledo.

An avid bowler, skater, seamstress, cook and baker of Cora’s Christmas cookies, Cora embraced life with passion. When she wasn’t caring for her family or making personalized Raggedy Anne Dolls, she could be found at events with her “Red Hatters”, hanging with her “Lunch Bunch” fighting for her neighborhood as the Block Watch Leader for Byrne Hill Estates and attending “BSF” Bible Study Fellowship.

Cora loved the Lord and she loved His people. She was a member of the Church of The New Covenant joining under the leadership of the late Pastor & Lady McKissick where she faithfully served as Usher President for 24 years until her sudden transition. In addition to ushering, Cora was a part of the senior choir and worked with the kitchen committee. Prior to Church of the New Covenant, She also attended St. Phillips Lutheran church.

On Wednesday, December 5, 2018, Cora Hammond made her transition from this life and joined her parents, Alfred & Hattie Mae Coleman; brothers Robert, Edward and Austin Coleman; sisters Alfreda Phillips and Jeanie Winters & special daughter Rhea Hammond.

Her legacy of love will live on through James Leroy Hammond, her children Dwayne Keith (Linda) Hammond of Bossier City, LA; Mark (Laure) Hammond, Alfred Quinsey (Anita) Hammond of Toledo, OH and Roxanne Hammond of Gahanna, OH. Her grandchildren Nia (Antoine) Morris, Correll (Antonia) Hammond, Breda Hammond and Quinsey Hammond; great grandchildren Nailah, Caiden, Ava, Brianna and Blake; Sister Mamie (Johnny) Hart; special loves Dena, Tyreese, Ravine, Brandon, Angel and Darshai and a host of special nephews, nieces, other loving relatives, church members and very special friends.
