Obituary for Melvin Claybrooks III

Melvin Claybrooks III, age 71, passed peacefully with his family around him on Friday, December 28, 2018. Melvin was born January 11, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Melvin and Doris Q. Claybrooks. He graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School where he participated in the band and track & field. He also graduated from Ohio University majoring in Fine Arts. There he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Melvin was an outstanding artist who specialized in oils and excelled in painting portraits. He participated in art shows at the Art Museum with the Corporation of Black Artists (COBA) in the 70’s. Melvin taught art in the Toledo Public Schools for over 20 years. He last worked and retired from Crown, Cork & Seal. Melvin accepted Christ at an early age and grew up attending St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church.

He is preceded in death by his father, Melvin Claybrooks Jr.; and brother, Harvey Morrison.

Friends and family meant everything to Mel.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife and caregiver, Lynn; former wife, Sylvia; mother, Doris Q. Claybrooks; children, Lori (James Geter), Lisa, Melvin IV (JC), Lynsi (Kamaal), Lynnette (Nate), Jacqueline, Melvin Marcus (Shakedia) and 10 grandchildren; sister, Bobbyette (Cleveland) Sanders; special friends, Robert (Linda) Harris, Bradford Crannon, Christopher Perdue & Mischa Latrice Wright and other relatives and friends.
