Obituary for Juanita M. Smith (Harris)

Juanita Maxine Harris Smith, 80, of Toledo, Ohio, was currently residing in Killeen, TX, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 17, 2019.

Affectionately known as NeNe, she enjoyed life to the fullest until her failing health 5 + years ago. She moved to Killeen TX with her care entrusted to her daughter Joe Ann Gray and granddaughter Juanita Cannie.

NeNe was born August 6, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio to Edward Harris and Blanche Haynes Harris. She was a graduate of Woodward High School, Toledo, Ohio.

She lived life abundantly spending time with her family and friends any time she could. She had a love for travel as well as meeting and conversing with anyone who would listen. She was an energetic, fun loving person that always had knack for making others smile.

NeNe was an accomplished craftswoman, who enjoyed, and was very good at ceramics, painting, sketching, and crocheting. She began her work outside the home with Ontario/Rinks Bargain City, Toledo Molding & Die Company, then Johns Manville from where she retired. She also provided childcare in her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Harris, Blanche Haynes Harris, brother Robert "Bobby" Harris, grandson Anthony Kenyetta Smith, and great granddaughters Rhilee and Rhilyn Smith.


NeNe is survived by her siblings, Francis Knolly, Rita Harris, Edward "Brother" Harris (Mary), only living aunt, Dorothy Bell, all of Toledo, Ohio; the father of her children John Wesley Smith Sr of Mansfield, Texas.

Her Children: Yvonne Lynette Smith Grant (Maurice), of Concord NC; John Wesley Smith Jr (Clevetta) of Oak Ridge, TN; Joe Ann Gray, and Ronald Gregory Smith (Denise) of Killeen, TX; Barry Calvin Smith (Georganne) of Toledo, OH; and Jeffery Gordon Smith (Wendy) of Pineville, LA.

Her GrandChildren: Ravonne Grant Hunt (Darrell) of Tallahassee,FL; Genice Grant Walker (Tim) of Phoenix, AZ; Qiana R. Smith of Dallas, TX; Juanita Sampson Cannie (Daryl), Katrina Smith Williams (Renardo), Richard "Bubba" Sampson, Dameron Smith all of Killeen, Tx; Daylin Smith, Dionna Smith, Ieesha Smith all of Toledo, OH; Landon Smith of Columbus, OH; Taneesha Smith of Altamonte Springs, FL; Karmen Smith Legette (Chris) of Atlanta, GA; Ronald G Smith Jr, of Denton, TX; and Sean Smith, Sara Dorsey, and Stephen Anderson, all of Pineville, LA. She is also survived by 21 great grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friend Claudette "Granny" Minor.
