Obituary for Melba J. Carrington

Melba Jane Carrington, affectionately known as “Mickey”, age 85 of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on April 23, 2019. She was born September 5, 1933 in Lockport, New York to the late Ulmont Jack and Jennie Belle (Jones) Jenkins. She was the oldest and only girl of six children.

As a young woman enjoying life, she met her Sweetheart, Harold M. Carrington, at a dance in Newfane, NY and was later married on April 2, 1954. Harold and Mickey remained active and worked in the Lockport community, while raising their 9 children until moving to Toledo, Ohio in 1974. Her role as a dedicated wife, loving mother and grandmother, was most important to her. So much so, that after raising their nine children, she decided to be a foster mother for Lucas County Children Service throughout the years. Keeping two sets of siblings together, they decided to adopt eight children in 1991.

Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor with an entertaining sense of humor. She was a woman of faith who nurtured her family through prayer, cooking and offering an ear and encouraging word of support. She especially loved the peace and beauty of gardening. She was known as Grandma/Granny to her grandchildren and great grandchildren who adored her and brought her immense joy. Mickey’s life was family. Her ability to love in abundance spans generations.

She was preceded in death by all her siblings; son-in-law Jerry Darnell; grandchildren Anthony and Tyson; great grandchildren Anita, Julio, Mylove and Da’Von.
