Obituary for Annie T. Childress
Annie T. Childress, “Anne” was born on February 1, 1938 to the union of William “Buddy” and Rosie Barefield in Marvell, Arkansas. She was the fourth child of eleven brothers and sisters. Annie married Willie C. Childress in 1958 and started her loving family. In 1959, Annie and her family relocated to Toledo, Ohio.
She attended a revival at 910 Dorr Street Church of Christ where Brother John Lawrence was the minister. Annie was baptized during the revival. In 1970, the Dorr St. congregation was renamed Glass City Church of Christ. Annie remained a faithful member of “The Glass” until her peaceful transition on Wednesday morning, May 29, 2019 at the young age of 81.
Annie was employed for many years by the Burt Rose and Marty Bobowick families. She was also employed by the Glass City Church of Christ. She enjoyed taking care of the interior of the church. She took personal pride and responsibility in assuring that the church was clean and presentable for Sunday morning services.
Annie was usually the first person to arrive at church on Sunday morning. She would always greet you with a smile and kind words. When you spent time with her, you would learn that she enjoyed working in the garden…her favorite flowers were petunias. She was famous for her cooking and baking…especially her cakes and her amazing “butter cookies”. She was always willing to help others. She had a passion for helping older people and being a role model to young women. She was a faithful member of the UAC (United Acappella Chorus). She enjoyed traveling with the chorus until her health prevented her from traveling. Annie was a “fashion plate”, she was always dressed to a “tee”. Her outfits were sophisticated and coordinated from head to toe. She was absolutely a role model in every way. She was a Christian woman who expressed her values in everything she did. Her life was guided by her faith in God and her commitment to the fellowship. She loved sharing her meals & desserts with her friends and family. She was outspoken regarding her Christian values and she did not hesitate to share them with anyone who would listen. She was respected and loved by those of us who were blessed to have experienced Anne’s unique kindness and love.
Annie will be remembered most for being a loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She was dedicated to teaching them what was expected of them being in the Lord as they grew up and became adults. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren, always looking forward to their visits. She would clean, bake and cook more of their favorite food than they could ever eat!
She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her precious memories four sons and one daughter: Ray Charles (Linda) Barefield, Dayton, OH; Willie C. (Beverly) Childress, Newport News, VA; Xavier (Diane) Childress, Fayetteville, NC; Clifford (Felicha) Childress and Renee Childress-Hill (Andre) all of Toledo, OH; four loving sisters and two brothers: Mary Webbs, Missouri City, TX; Deloris (Jerry) Thompson, Salinas, CA; Elihue (Essie Lee) Barefield, Marvell, AR; Shirley Janett, West Helena, AR; Thelma Wilkerson, Houston, TX; She also leaves to cherish her memory 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, church family and many dear friends.
