Obituary for Jerry Stewart
Jerry Stewart, affectionately known to all as "Drops", was born April 25, 1946, in Woodville, OH to parents, Mary L. House Hollis and Johnny Steward. He received his wings to move to his heavenly home on Friday, June 7, 2019, at 11:06 p.m., at the Toledo Hospital E.R.
Jerry was employed with GM Powertrain Toledo Plant for 33 years. He retired January 1, 2002.
Jerry grew up in Toledo and attended Scott High School. "Once a Bull Dog, Always a Bull Dog", in the class of 1965.
He loved to play pool, when he wasn't working or spending time with his family or at church, he could be found at the Grenadier Pool Hall, hanging out with his many friends. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bulls fan.
Jerry had another love and that was boxing. A man by the name of Buddy Carr, who was the president of the Northwest Ohio (AAU) Amateur Athletic Union and also the Toledo Golden Gloves Association, was told about a guy named "Drops" so Mr. Carr traveled up and down Dorr Street looking for "Drops" and finally found him in a pool hall. He talked "Drops" into coming to The Soul City Boxing Gym, and he agreed; he knew some of the fellows there. In his second year he was named Outstanding Boxer at the Nationals Competition in Kansas City, MO.
One of Jerry's best boxing friends and mentors was Louis Self, now Pastor Louis Self: Pastor of Majestic Praise. Jerry gave his life to Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Later in life, he joined the Southern Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Robert L. Wormley, and continued as an active member under the present pastor, Pastor Roger D. Carson. He was a dedicated member of The Shepherds Care Ministry until his death.
Jerry was preceded in death by both parents; wife, Caroline Stewart; son, Anthony "Tony" Newberry; niece, Mary Smith; and granddaughter, Ariel Chapman.
Jerry leaves to cherish his love, his son, Myron L. Noble (Lucy); daughter, Hope Williams; sister, Linda Diane Smith; brother, Johnny Stewart; niece, Tinesha Smith; nephew, Ervin Smith III; and a host of dear friends; Pastor and First Lady Willie and Lavern Knighten; God brother, Mr. Larry Jones; special friends, Louise McCulloun, and all of his boxing and pool playing friends.
