Obituary for Helen Marie Tuggle

Helen Marie Tuggle, 77, of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully and gracefully on Saturday, June 15, 2019 surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of her home.

Affectionately known as “Granny” to many, Helen was born in Inverness, MS on March 11, 1942 to Richard and Emma Lee Ireland. At the age of 7 she relocated to Toledo, OH where she was blessed to be raised by Green and Elizabeth Sisson (her beloved Aunt and Uncle).

She received her bachelor’s degree from Mississippi Valley State. It is here where she met her husband of 54 years, Charles James Tuggle. To their union they had 3 children. She went on to receive her master’s degree from the University of Toledo.

Helen began her teaching career in Biloxi, MS. She retired from Toledo Public Schools after 27 years of service as an elementary school teacher. She enjoyed bowling, reading, shopping and writing. Her passion was serving in ministry. She was the Superintendent of Sunday School at Braden United Methodist Church for over 10 years. She delighted in serving on the newsletter and bulletin board ministries and teaching about Black History. The youth library at Braden has been named after her. Her community efforts included oversight of the Buckle Up program, an active participant in TUSA and she’s most known for the teaching, mentoring and tutoring of many youth in the city.

Helen is preceded in death by her biological parents Emma Lee & Richard Ireland, sisters Dorothy and Anna Lee; brothers Lewis and Richard and her beloved Uncle and Aunt, Green & Elizabeth Sisson.

Helen is survived by her husband Charles, sons Antonio (fiancé Sunday), Sean (Angela), and daughter Kellie (Jewell) Jones. Grandchildren Montrese, Antoine, Kirsten, TreSean, Cody & Kasie; 4 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and close friends.
